Patients with Dry Macular Degeneration, with vision between 20/30- and 20/70.
This is a non-invasive, red-light therapy treatment. Patients are not dilated. They can have both eyes treated on the same day. The procedure takes under 5 minutes per eye. It is performed by a physician. The patient sits upright at the machine, much like an eye exam. Treatments are done in cycles of 9 treatment sessions over 3 weeks. This is repeated every 4 months for 2 years.
Studies have shown that over 60% of the patients in the clinical trials gained vision. Also, the macular degeneration (Drusen), reduced in size and progression slowed down.
This is an FDA approved procedure and the only treatment for Dry Macular Degeneration which has shown improvement in vision. There have been no notable adverse effects. Patients with Wet AMD in the eye to be treated, Epilepsy, Ocular Migraines and Uveitis are excluded from this treatment.
Dr. Hershberger is performing the treatments. Florida Eye Associates is the only practice in Brevard with this technology. The cost is $2000 per each 9-treatment cycle. Patients must be willing to commit to the full 2 years of treatment.
